The strong-field approximation (SFA) provides the backbone of our understanding of the interaction of radiation with bound systems, since the underlying assumptions are intuitive and the results readily lend themselves to a physical interpretation. The SFA has been remarkably successful, especially in the prediction of electron spectra, if it is augmented to allow for rescattering. If the SFA ionization amplitude is evaluated by the (steepest-descent) saddle-point method, the concept of quantum orbits emerges, which affords particular predictive power and aesthetical appeal. Interference is crucial for the electron spectrum generated by quantum orbits. I detail the SFA for atoms and simple molecules and provide examples of the consequences of interference on the spectra observed.
